The breeze from the Atlantic Ocean , slows the ripening of the grapes in the vineyards of Estremadura region . The historical D.O.C. of Colares, although nowadays one of the smallest in the region, produced in the past a famous and much appreciated wine. Its main grape the red Ramisco, has an historic reputation. The Ramisco grows nowhere else but in Colares. In ripens with great difficulty and in sandy soil leading to a extremely complicated wine production. The white Colares based on Malvasia, is believed to be a better wine for the region because it ripens much easier. The vicinity to Lisbon of D.O.C. Colares as well D.O.C. Carcavelos, make the land prices of this areas really high for agriculture, so wine yards are slowly disappearing ! Carcavelos wine is already very difficult to find in markets, the D.O.C. Colares still is on the menue of many restaurants in the area but at quite expensive prices.
